Hospice Care

Helping to ease the stress, worry, and fear for each patient.

How We Can Help

The news that a loved one may be facing a terminal illness can be frightening, concerning, and bring a sense of uncertainty at a difficult time for your family.

At ChristianaCare-AccentCare, our compassionate teams can help to ease the stress, worry, and fear for each patient, their caregivers, and family members during the end stages of an illness. Our specially trained, multidisciplinary staff can provide a range of services, caring for your loved one at home, in a hospital, or nursing home.

Getting Started on Hospice Care

Hospice services are generally offered for those individuals whom two physicians will certify have less than six months to live if their disease follows its normal course. In most cases, hospice is a set of services that come to the patient in their home, wherever they consider that to be.

If your loved one is getting treatment at a ChristianaCare facility or hospital and you are eligible and ready for the support hospice can provide, our teams will coordinate to ensure a seamless transition that keeps you informed and supported.

We can discuss care options including receiving hospice care at home or in a hospital setting. There are currently specialized hospice units at both ChristianaCare’s Newark campus and ChristianaCare’s Wilmington campus.

Support

Daily Personal Needs

Our services are focused on supporting the patient and their family during this emotional time. In addition to relieving pain, discomfort, and other symptoms, our team can help with bathing, hair care, shaving, skin care, linen changes, and other personal needs that may overwhelm family or personal caregivers.

Spiritual and Emotional Support

Receiving religious counsel

Our chaplains honor all faiths and religious traditions to provide you and your loved ones with spiritual support.

End-of-life emotional support for patients

Patients are emotionally supported in reflecting on their lives and coping with feelings of loss in a variety of ways:

  • Legacy Projects – Working with our caregivers, patients can cope with feelings of loss and create tangible memories to share with families and friends.
  • Music Therapy –Live music can bring back happy memories and provide comfort to patients. These services are provided by our board-certified music therapists. Learn More about Music Therapy.
  • Namaste Care – This involves meaningful, hand-on activities that help patients to relax and experience peace and serenity. It is designed to make patients feel valued and seen. Learn More about Namaste Care.

A comforting presence during grieving

After the death of a patient, our team will continue to be a healing presence by providing grief support and counseling to your family for at least 13 months.

How does my family qualify for hospice care?

Under Medicare guidelines, you are eligible for hospice care if two doctors agree that you have a life expectancy of six months or less, and you are no longer seeking a cure to your illness.
Medicare, Medicaid, and many private insurance plans may pay for hospice.

Whether you need hospice care at home or in our hospital, we are happy to answer any questions. Please call 866-443-9856 to learn more or to coordinate an admission.

What is hospice care?

Hospice is designed to provide treatments and therapies that are focused on the comfort of individuals who are nearing the end of their lives. Our goal is to make sure that the patient’s final days are as comfortable as possible.
