Weight Loss Medication Program
If lifestyle changes have failed to help you achieve the weight loss you hoped for, weight loss medication can help. Weight loss medications are usually recommended for someone with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above with serious health conditions such as type 2 diabetes or high blood pressure.
Before receiving a prescription for weight loss medication, you’ll undergo an initial evaluation with our weight-management team, which includes a nurse practitioner and a registered dietitian. After a thorough interview and health assessment our experienced nurse practitioners will help you choose the appropriate FDA approved medication based on your medical history and eating habits.
Regular appointments will be scheduled with your nurse practitioner to help you manage the risks and benefits of the medication. If you do not lose at least 5% of your body weight in three months, an indicator that the drug is not effective for you, a different drug may be prescribed.
A critical component of all of our programs is learning and adopting new eating habits and other lifestyle changes. As the medication helps you follow a lower-calorie diet, you will attend 12 weekly appointments then 12 bi-weekly appointments with your registered dietitian. During these weekly visits you will focus on identifying goals and overcoming barriers. Emphasis will be on healthy food choices that help you maintain the weight loss.
Additional support is offered in the form of phone coaching or group sessions with our clinical psychologist and you will have the option of developing an exercise plan with an exercise physiologist.
