Women's Health 2020

Women's Health 2020 - Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Why are you making all of these changes at Christiana Hospital? Isn’t the hospital large enough already?

  • A. We are transforming health care for women, children and infants through the state. This enhancement project will allow Christiana Care to provide the most innovative, high-quality, comprehensive specialty care for babies, children and women of all ages. The eight-story building will add nearly 400,000 square feet to the hospital and will allow us to more seamlessly coordinate health care services for women and children. The new facility will support Christiana Care’s continuing commitment to providing an exceptional birth experience for families today and for generations to come.

Q. Are you including the community in your planning?

  • A. Yes. As always, we are keeping our patients and families at the center of our planning. Throughout this process, we have partnered with our Women and Children’s Patient and Family Advisory Council, with moms and dads who generously share their insights and ideas.New members are welcome. If you know someone who might be interested in serving on this volunteer committee, invite them to contact Ann-Marie Baker in Patient Experience at abaker@christianacare.org or (302) 327-3403.

Q. Will you continue to deliver babies and provide the care I need during construction?

  • A. Yes, we will continue to provide the high-quality care and exceptional health care experience that our community relies on throughout construction. This includes all of our maternity services, including our Level III neonatal intensive care unit.

Q. What about other hospital services? How are they affected by this project?

  • A. All of our programs and services will continue, without disruption, during the entire project.

Q. Will the building have a parking garage?

  • A. Complementing the Women and Children’s project will be a four-level parking garage near the hospital main entrance for patients and visitors. The garage will be constructed and operational before we start work on the Women’s building. We are also adding a much-needed second level to an employee parking lot for our Christiana Hospital staff.

Q. Will a new building mean even more traffic around Christiana Hospital?

  • While the new building adds nearly 400,000 square feet to the hospital, we do not anticipate an increased volume of patients or visitors. Instead, we are providing larger, more comfortable, more clinically advanced private rooms and are more seamlessly integrating services for the safety and comfort of our patients and their families.

Q. Where will I park on the Christiana Hospital campus during construction?

  • A. To minimize inconvenience during all phases of construction, we have arranged ample alternate parking and shuttle service. Campus signs indicate parking options.

Q: How many jobs will be added during construction?

  • A. We will employ about 2,000 people in the construction of the building and garages.
