Oncology Express Unit and Primary Care

Making Things a Bit Easier

Cancer treatment is hard enough without having to make trips to the Emergency Department (ED) due to complications from treatment.

The Oncology Express Unit, located on the 1st floor of the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute, is here to make things a bit easier. It was created especially for cancer patients who may experience problems during cancer treatment that would normally require a trip to the ED.

We offer convenient treatment for a variety of issues, including:

  • Dehydration.
  • Blood transfusions.
  • Breathing issues.
  • Bacterial or viral illnesses.
  • Electrolyte imbalances and transfusions.

The Oncology Express Unit is staffed by a team of oncology clinicians who can help you save time and money by avoiding long lines or unnecessary testing in the ED.

Here’s how it works:

  • If you’re having a problem, such as one of the issues described above, call your oncologist.
  • Your oncologist will then call the Oncology Express Unit to ensure this is the right place for you to get treatment.
  • If the team can treat your problem, your oncologist will give you a referral so you can make an appointment.
  • Hours: Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

The next time you’re feeling ill from your cancer treatment, contact your oncologist and find out if the Oncology Express Unit is right for you.

Primary Care at Graham Cancer Center

For patients without a primary care provider (PCP), you can now refer them to the PCP in the Oncology Express Unit and be assured of management and follow up by a PCP with a focus on oncology patients.

Here’s how it works:

  • Referring clinician or member of the practice calls the Oncology Express Unit to make the referral.
  • For patients who do not currently have a primary care provider only.
  • Patients will be followed by the Unit’s PCP until completion of treatment by a radiation, surgical or medical and/or hematologic oncologist.
  • After treatment patient will be connected to a community primary care provider.
  • Same-day appointments are available.

Hours: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, 8 a.m.- 12 p.m. Thursday, 11 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Primary Care Referrals

Call 302-623-4501 to refer a patient to our Primary Care Practice in the Oncology Express Unit.

Primary care providers play an important role in their patient’s cancer care. PCPs can address issues such a hypertension and hyperglycemia that might prevent or delay treatment. Patients without a PCP oftentimes seek management of issues of the primary health domain from their oncologist.
