Surrogacy

Resources and information for surrogates, intended parents, and agencies

Surrogacy

Surrogacy is a process in which a woman carries and gives birth to a child for another individual or couple.  ChristianaCare recognizes that some members of our community may choose to participate in traditional surrogacy or gestational surrogacy, and ChristianaCare has steps in place to help the delivery and legal processes go as smoothly as possible for all those involved.

Surrogacy Definitions

Gestational carrier surrogacy and traditional surrogacy

Gestational carrier: A woman (host) who has been impregnated with a Fertilized egg that is not her own.

Surrogate: A woman who donates her own egg to carry a child for the intended parents.

Genetic Parents: True biological parents of the infant. It is also possible that the sperm or egg is from a known donor who desires to be listed as the genetic parent and the other is a donated egg or sperm. In this case, only one parent would be listed on the birth certificate.

Intended Parents: the individual or couple who partner with a surrogate to carry and give birth to a child on the intended parent’s behalf.

Resources

The Patient Information Form each should be filled out twice; once for the Intended/Genetic Parent(s) and a separate form for the Surrogate parent.
