Specialty Care

Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program

Your Care Plan

When you have cystic fibrosis, you need a plan to stay well and live well.

The Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program provides the specialized care you need to stay on track, especially if you are transitioning out of the pediatric program with our partner, the Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. At ChristianaCare, we work with you to develop a treatment plan that lets you live a full life despite your chronic illness.

Your Care Team

An experienced pulmonologist will oversee your care, including regularly assessing your use of medications and pancreatic enzyme supplements. The pulmonologist also leads an interdisciplinary team of other health care professionals who will work together to monitor your respiratory and digestive health, and fine-tune your diet, exercise regimen and airway clearance techniques. This team includes:

  • A nurse coordinator.
  • Respiratory therapist.
  • Dietitian.
  • Physical therapist.
  • Social worker.

Because cystic fibrosis can affect your health in a variety of ways, the program also makes a variety of physicians available for consultation. This includes specialists in:

  • Reproduction and fertility.
  • Gastroenterology.
  • Endocrinology.
  • Infectious diseases.
  • Ear, nose and throat medicine.

We recommend you follow the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation guideline to visit our team at least every three months, or four times a year. Our clinic schedules regular appointments the first and third Thursday morning of every month. If you are experiencing complications, you may seek care more often.

After Hours Contacts

The Adult Cystic Fibrosis Program has a pulmonologist on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week to help our current patients in an emergency.

The pulmonologist who is on call works with Pulmonary Associates. Our program director and associate director work with this group. All of their colleagues are familiar with cystic fibrosis and are able to help you.

If a non-life-threatening emergency arises on a weekday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., please call our nurse coordinator, Mary Gant, MSN, RN, at 302-320-6300. She will contact the doctor if necessary.

On weekends, holidays or after 4:30 p.m., contact Pulmonary Associates directly at 302-623-7600 and the pulmonologist who is on call will assist you.
