Specially Trained Cardiologists

A cardiologist is a doctor with special training and skill in finding, treating and preventing diseases of the heart and blood vessels. If your primary-care doctor believes that you might have a significant heart condition, he may consult with a cardiologist or refer you to one. A cardiologist may recommend any of a variety of tests that can evaluate symptoms like shortness of breath, heart murmurs, chest pains or dizzy spells. Cardiologists are specially trained to treat heart attacks, heart failure and other serious diseases.

A cardiologist is not a heart surgeon, although your cardiologist may work closely with a heart surgeon as part of your heart-health care team.

Choose a Center

Cardiologists from ChristianaCare Cardiology Consultants and other practices throughout the community provide care at the Center for Heart & Vascular Health. If you wish to ensure that you have access to the care at the Center for Heart & Vascular Health, tell your cardiologist that you wish to be treated at ChristianaCare. Find a cardiologist.

Same Day Clinic

You look to your primary care physician to steer you straight to the right place when you need further testing or specialists – particularly if your visit suggests further cardiovascular evaluation. So it should be reassuring for you to know your doctor works with the ChristianaCare Cardiology Consultants Same Day Clinic.

When further cardiac diagnostic testing is necessary, your doctor’s office can get you an appointment at the clinic within 24 hours. Your testing and evaluation will take place at the ChristianaCare Center for Heart & Vascular Health, a national, regional and local leader for heart care.

Every effort is made to make cardiac testing convenient, including test reports provided to your primary care physician within 24 hours and free valet parking at the main entrance to Christiana Hospital.

Pacemakers need to be checked periodically. Our Pacemaker Care Center is dedicated to the specialized care of patients with pacemakers. Please call our office at 302-623-1929 for an appointment. A member of our Pacemaker Care Team will return your call.

We also offer a transtelephonic pacemaker check; call 302-623-1929.

Anticoagulation Center

Care

The ChristianaCare Anticoagulation Center cares for patients who are on an anticoagulant medication (blood thinner), such as warfarin (Coumadin) to prevent blood clots or stroke.

The Anticoagulation Center is staffed by specially trained clinical pharmacists who work with the Cardiology Consultants providers to make sure patients receive safe and optimal care.

Monitoring

The clinical pharmacists perform international normalized ratio (INR) lab monitoring, adjust warfarin doses per protocol as necessary, conduct follow up lab work, review all your medications to prevent or monitor drug interactions, and provide education and counseling for patients taking anticoagulants.

We offer comprehensive face-to-face visits for fingerstick INR testing by appointment. We also manage patients via telephone who test at home or at a lab.

Referral

Patients must be 18 years or older and already on warfarin or will need to begin warfarin. Eligible patients are referred by a ChristianaCare Cardiology Consultants provider.
