Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Helping you achieve the highest level of function possible.

The Work of Physiatrists

Physical medicine and rehabilitation is a branch of medicine that focuses on medical conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nervous system, bones, joints, tendons, and ligaments. Doctors who specialize in this branch of medicine are called physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians, or physiatrists.

Treatments

Physiatrists treat people of all ages and are focused on helping people overcome injuries, illnesses, and disabling conditions, such as stroke.

PM&R physicians treat people with a range of issues, including:

    • Problems with their balance that put them at risk of falling.
    • Concussions.
    • Traumatic brain injuries.
    • Amputation.

Their goal is to help their patients achieve the highest level of function possible. They lead a team of clinicians that often includes physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, physician assistants, and nurses. PM&R physicians also work closely with other physicians, including neurologists, orthopaedic surgeons, primary care physicians, and others.

PM&R physicians at ChristianaCare work with both inpatients and outpatients. Patients staying at the Center for Rehabilitation at Wilmington Hospital, our 40-bed inpatient facility, may work with them, as well as therapists, nurses, and other staff. This facility is certified by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF).

Patients may also work with a PM&R physician on an outpatient basis.
