Matthew Rubino, M.D., MBA, FACS, is the chair of the Department of Surgery and physician executive for the Surgical Services service line. In this role, he works with Surgical Services providers across ChristianaCare to provide high quality, efficient and timely medical care and to maintain graduate, postgraduate and continuing education programs in the Department of Surgery. He is accountable for workforce stability, financial vitality, value-based outcomes and strategic direction of clinical services delivered by the Surgical Services service line in support of ChristianaCare’s mission.
Dr. Rubino has held several clinical and academic leadership roles at ChristianaCare, including serving as program director of the general surgery residency, chief of Surgical Services for the Newark campus, and division head for Surgical Services. In his clinical practice, he specializes in general and minimally invasive surgery, including gallbladder removal, hernia repair, bowel and colon surgery, skin and soft tissue surgery.
Dr. Rubino is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Legislative Committee for the American College of Surgeons. He is an executive counselor and past president of the Delaware Chapter of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the Association of Program Directors in Surgery, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons and the American College of Health Care Executives.
Dr. Rubino earned his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College and his Master of Business Administration degree from Auburn University. He completed his general surgery residency at ChristianaCare and has been in practice in Delaware since graduating.
