Shortage of Contrast for Imaging Services

Because of a global shortage of iodinated contrast material (Omnipaque) caused by temporary overseas manufacturing disruptions, ChristianaCare is taking steps to preserve supply so that it remains available for the most time-sensitive and urgent patient needs. (Learn more in our frequently asked questions.)

Omnipaque contrast is the most widely used contrast material for CT scans and radiographic examinations at ChristianaCare facilities. It is also used for cardiac imaging and interventions, and in the GI lab, Surgicenter and other settings.

The shortage is expected to last several weeks, and likely into the summer months.

Hospitals and health care organizations worldwide are managing the effects of the shortage and the impact to patient care.

ChristianaCare is making every effort to meet the needs of patients who need this product in their procedures. We are working individually with physicians to prioritize those patients with the most urgent needs.

Wherever possible, we are using alternative contrast material and limiting its use to ensure adequate supplies for time sensitive and emergent exams. It is possible that some elective procedures that use this product will need to be delayed.

ChristianaCare will continue to look for options to minimize disruptions created by the shortage, as we serve our community as expert, caring partners in health.

How Can We Help

Personalized Care

At ChristianaCare, we are dedicated to delivering the safest and most effective gynecological treatment and care available. After a complete assessment, a personalized treatment plan is prepared for every patient.

Everything we do is centered on you and your individual needs. As partners with you and your health care team, we can offer you exceptional care that incorporates the best practices and best technology available. Our services include:

General Gynecology – With services including family planning, contraception, treatment of menopause-related symptoms and routine exams and pap tests.

Pap Smear (Pap Tests) – Getting regularly scheduled pap smears is an effective method for preventing and detecting cancer of the cervix, the cylinder of tissue that connects the vagina and uterus.

A pap smear is a simple, painless test to screen for precancerous lesions on the cervix, as well as actual cancer.

Pap smears also save lives. Cervical cancer progresses very slowly and pap smears alert doctors to abnormal cells that can be treated before they actually become cancerous. In the last 50 years, due to widespread screening, the incidence of cervical cancer has fallen almost 50 percent in the United States.

Hysterectomy – If you’re suffering from symptoms such as heavy, frequent periods, uterine fibroids, a prolapsed womb or cancer of the vagina and related systems, you may need to undergo a hysterectomy to remove the womb. As one of the most common gynecological operations, we are able to guide and support you throughout the entire process so that you can remain calm, confident and healthy at all times.

Learn more about having a hysterectomy:
