Developing innovative strategies to reduce health disparities
The Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute (HFGCCRI) Cancer Control & Population Sciences (CCPS) team aims to develop innovative strategies to advance cancer health equity. Located in the Cawley Center for Translational Cancer Research, and led by Scott D. Siegel, PhD, MHCDS, the Director of Cancer Control & Population Sciences, the CCPS team includes a Certified Clinical Research Coordinator who serves as the team’s operational manager, two full-time study coordinators, a data scientist, and a postdoctoral fellow.
Under the direction of Dr. Siegel, the CCPS team’s research focuses on developing innovative strategies to reduce health disparities and advance cancer health equity by delineating the relationship between multilevel factors (neighborhood, interpersonal, and individual) and the leading potentially modifiable risk factors for cancer (smoking, alcohol use, dietary, and screening). Dr. Siegel has a strong record of leading and serving as a co-investigator on National Cancer Institute (NCI) and National Institute of Health (NIH) funded studies that involve the collection of including behavioral, geospatial, biometric, and cross-institutional electronic health record data.
In additional to full time personnel, the CCPS team maintains formal consultation relationships with epidemiologists and other statisticians at Johns Hopkins University, Drexel University, and the Fox Chase Cancer Center. Collaborations also include ChristianaCare researchers and departments such as Dr. Jennifer Sims-Mourtada, the Office of Health Equity, and faculty from outside institutions such as the Wistar Institute in Philadelphia, the University of Delaware and stakeholders from local community groups and government.
