Philanthropy

More than 5 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s, and as many as 16 million will have the disease in 2050. Nearly one in every three seniors who dies each year has Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.

In Delaware, the projected growth rate of Alzheimer’s is among the highest in the Northeast, with approximately 26,000 people coping with the disease or a related disorder.

Living with Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia can be difficult and frustrating for patients and caregivers alike. Individual treatment plans and extensive support from health professionals with special expertise in managing these diseases can make all the difference in the world.

The Swank Center for Memory Care and Geriatric Consultation ensures that our neighbors have access to expert assessment and advice. Our medical team helps patients and families manage the journey by offering essential support, education and guidance. It is the first and only comprehensive outpatient program of its kind in Delaware.

Philanthropy in Action

Since opening our doors in 2011, thanks to a cornerstone gift of $1.25 million from the Howard W. Swank, Alma K. Swank and Richard Kemper Swank Foundation, the Swank Memory Care Center has been on a significant growth path. Patient visits have grown from 600 in 2011 to a projected 1,500+ visits in 2015. Your partnership with us plays a pivotal role in helping us serve our community.

Philanthropy helps sustain value-added services like caregiver support and respite services. Often not reimbursed by insurance, these vital programs enhance the outstanding clinical care provided at the center.

Looking ahead, our goals include an expansion of services including increased resources for caregiver support and opportunities for appropriate and interested patients to participate in clinical trials with the new medications that offer hope of arresting the progression of Alzheimer’s disease’s devastating effects.

Please consider making a gift today to the Swank Center for Memory Care and Geriatric Consultation. As shared by one caregiver, “We had doctors dealing with dementia at other institutions but the Swank Center for Memory Care and Geriatric Consultation stands alone. It is the only place that was not only for the patient but was a constant source of support for the caregiver and family.”
