After Delivery

Lactation

We encourage new mothers to breastfeed whenever possible.

Lactation

For the good health of babies and their mothers, we encourage new mothers and lactating people to breastfeed whenever possible, and we offer a support network to make it an easy, enjoyable experience for you and your baby.

Breast Milk is the perfect food for your baby as it contains antibodies to protect them from illness, is easily digested and changes alongside the growth of your baby. It is also a fantastic tool in the bonding process.

Our commitment to the highest level of care for infant feeding and parent-baby bonding has earned us a Baby-Friendly™ designation by the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative—a global program of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

Our Services

Our experienced nurses are ready to help you with any challenges you may have in breastfeeding and we also supply you with a breast milk pumping journal that can help you track the amount of milk you are making for your baby.

The journal includes: tips for building a supply of breast milk, comfort of flange fit while pumping, how to clean the pump as well as the kit parts and storage guidelines supported by ChristianaCare.

Lactation consultants from ChristianaCare can offer hands-on help with breastfeeding problems and are available for appointments at the Breastfeeding Education and Resource Center at Christiana Hospital.

The Breastfeeding Education and Resource Center provides:

Peer Counselors for WIC-eligible Moms

WIC peer counselors are lactating people who have breastfed their own babies. They educate and connect with new parents and parents-to-be, helping them to become more confident and comfortable with learning to breastfeed.

WIC peer counselors can also offer:

  • Tips for how to breastfeed comfortable and discreetly, even in public.
  • Ways to stay close to your baby through breastfeeding, even after you return to work or school.
