Why Choose ChristianaCare?

When you’re expecting a baby, there are many decisions to make — and choosing where you’ll deliver your baby is one of the most important. It’s easy to see why so many families choose ChristianaCare as the best place to deliver their babies.

The experienced health care professionals on our labor and delivery teams are committed in providing the expert care and personal attention you deserve in a comfortable, safe setting. For generations, ChristianaCare has partnered with mothers and their families at this very special time.

In-Person Maternity Tour

Due to a seasonal surge in inpatients being admitted, Maternity Tours are currently unavailable at ChristianaCare, Newark Campus.

We hope to resume the tours soon. In the meantime please check our Frequently Asked Questions and the Virtual Maternity Tour below.

Please come into the OB Triage located in the Women’s & Children’s building, right across from the main entrance.

Parking is free, and available in the visitor parking garage located right across from the Women’s & Children’s building’s main entrance.

If you are in active labor, or there is an emergency, a support person can pull up to the drop off entrance of the building and you can be dropped off before your support person parks. Wheelchairs are available if needed.

Full details on visitation can be found on our visitation policy.

  • Once you are evaluated in OB Triage, you may be discharged or admitted from that area.
  • In Labor & Delivery, your length of stay will depend on your labor course.
  • In Postpartum, you may be discharged in 2 days for a vaginal delivery or 3-4 days for a C-section.

Depending on your labor course, ChristianaCare has a variety of labor aids to assist with the birthing process. For example, we have:

  • Peanut and birthing balls
  • Pushing bars
  • Mirrors
  • and more!

If you require an epidural, our anesthesia team will help you make an informed decision and support your needs.

We will have everything you and your baby need during your stay here. However, there are some additional things you may want to include in your bag:

  • 1-2 going home outfits for your baby
  • Blanket for baby to go home with
  • Parents personal toiletries
  • Pajamas or nightgown/robe for parent
  • 1-2 extra pillows with colorful pillowcases (not white)
  • Breastfeeding pillow
  • Postpartum underwear and pads
  • Baby diapers and wipes
  • Adult gown/nonskid socks
  • Baby shirts, blankets, and sleep sack for stay
  • Breastfeeding support, formula and bottles if needed
  • Souvenir footprint card
  • Care of You and Your Baby postpartum and newborn care resource book (yours to keep) careofyouandyourbaby.pdf
  • Car Seat – please bring the day after baby is born to prepare for discharge
  • Pediatrician – we encourage you to make a pediatrician appointment 3 days after their birth
  • Safe Sleep – your infant will need a safe place to sleep like a crib or bassinet ready at home before discharge

ChristianaCare takes the safety of our patients, visitors and caregivers seriously. Each main entrance has metal detectors and security personnel for your safety.

Each baby will have a HUGS tag, and ID bands placed on them after delivery as part of our security measures.

Mom and baby will receive a Teddy Bear Bracelet that connects them both with the same numbers.

Employees of the Women’s & Children’s department are recognizable by having a yellow stripe across their ChristianaCare identity badge highlighting their name and title.
