Emergency Air Transport

ChristianaCare LifeNet, an affiliate of Air Methods’ LifeNet Medical Transport System, provides emergency air transport to critically ill or injured adult, pediatric, and neonatal patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Our flight team is nationally recognized and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Transport Services (CAMTS).

ChristianaCare LifeNet provides service to Delaware and its surrounding states via two bases. One helicopter is based at the Christiana Hospital in Newark, Delaware and our second helicopter is based at the Delaware Coastal Airport in Georgetown, Delaware. ChristianaCare also maintains helipads at its Wilmington Hospital and Middletown Free-standing Emergency Department.

Equipment & Technology

Each aircraft is staffed with a pilot, flight nurse, and a flight paramedic. This highly trained critical care team provides patients the highest level of care during rapid air transport to definitive care. Our flight teams are equipped with and transport an array of critical-care equipment and technology, including:

Ventilator.
Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump.
Invasive Line Monitoring.
Temporary Pacemaker.
Ventricular Assist Devices (VADs).
Intracranial Ventriculostomy.
High Risk Pregnancy Transports.
Neonatal Transports.

Administered Procedures

During an emergency, the Flight Team is trained to begin and sustain life-saving procedures, such as:

Advanced airway interventions.
Cardioversion/defibrillation/pacing.
Needle chest decompression.
Cricothyroidotomy.
Rapid Sequence Intubation.
Transfusing Blood Product.
Expedient transfers for time-dependent cardiac or neurosurgical interventions.
Advanced pharmacological intervention with vasopressors, antiarrhythmics, paralytics, sedatives, and narcotics.

About the Aircraft

All air operations are provided by Air Methods Corporation. Air Methods supplies ChristianaCare LifeNet with two Helicopters. One is a BK 117 twin-engine aircraft that is 43 feet long, weighs 7,055 pounds and has an approximately 300-mile range. The other is an EC 145 twin-engine aircraft that is 43 feet long, weighs 7,903 pounds and has an approximately 300-mile range.

Safety

The top priority of ChristianaCare LifeNet pilots is to transport the patient and flight crew safely. For safety requirements, ChristianaCare LifeNet helicopters request a minimum landing space of 75 square feet. The landing space should be clear of towers, poles, wires, trees, signs and other obstacles. No one is to approach the helicopter until motioned to do so by one of the crewmembers on scene. Remember remain clear of the tail rotor and main rotor at all times.
