Injury Prevention

The best way to treat injuries is to prevent them from happening at all.

Ready to Help

The ChristianaCare Trauma Department stands ready to help people with their injuries, though we would prefer to help prevent injuries so that no one would need our help. That’s why we take an active role in injury prevention in the community.

We regularly talk to groups and provide tips about different ways to prevent injuries.

Preventing Falls for Seniors

Preventing falls for seniors is a key part of our injury prevention efforts in the community.

  • One in every four people over the age of 65 will fall every year.
  • Falls are the leading cause of injury related deaths for people over 65.

ThinkFirst to Prevent Falls

This interactive session is a 60 minute talk for the older adult. The talk helps educate about the risk for falls and the steps for minimizing the risk.

  • Have a medication review: ask your doctor to review your medications for those that increase your risk for falls.
  • Have a vision exam: have your eyes examined and if possible, corrected.
  • Stay active: have a regular exercise routine. Exercising regularly is the most important way to prevent falls.
  • Do a home safety assessment: check your home for falls hazards.

Preventing Car Crashes

Preventing car crashes is an important focus of our injury prevention efforts.

  • Car crashes are the leading cause of death for people ages 15-24 and remain one of the leading causes of death in the United States.
  • Teen drivers are three times more likely than more experienced drivers to be in a fatal car crash (CDC).
  • 80% of car crashes are preventable.
ThinkFirst for Teens

The interactive presentation, “ThinkFirst for Teens,” is a national program designed for middle school to high school students. This talk helps educate about the dangers of driving and ways to prevent car crashes.

Learn more about ways to prevent distracted driving.

  • Take the pledge: pledge to end distracted driving per the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
  • Follow the 10 tips for handling the most common distractions: from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA).

The Strong Bones program helps you and your bone health by assessing your risk through a bone density scan, improving follow-up care, and partnering with your primary care doctor by providing focused care with an effective treatment plan.
It's never too late to take control of your bone health and reduce your risk of a fall. The ChristianaCare Safe Steps Program assesses your bone health and fragility and provides a plan to address risk factors.
