Interested in pursuing a career as an Allied Health Professional?

Why do you need to shadow?

The best way to know what career you are interested in is to have firsthand exposure to that career. Observing a healthcare provider will provide insight into their day-to-day life.

Shadowing allows you the opportunity to visualize your goals and can be one of the most meaningful, impactful experiences that contributes toward your decision to pursue a career in healthcare.

  • A way to engage with practicing providers to learn more about their career.
  • A time limited experience, up to 40 hours.
  • A way to complete a senior project.
  • An avenue to accumulate hundreds of hours to satisfy an application or course requirement.
  • A way to obtain a letter of recommendation.
  • An opportunity to collect patient contact hours.

* Once you reach the 40-hour maximum allowed by the ChristianaCare Healthcare Career Shadowing program consider exploring other health systems and private care offices for additional opportunities. 

Program Details:

  • Interested Students should complete the Allied Health Career Shadowing form
    • If you have a preceptor that you’ve contacted, please include their information on this form.
  • Requests to shadow must be submitted at least 14 days prior to desired start date.
    • Student will receive a confirmation email once request has been approved.
  • Students are limited to 40 hours per year,
    • Students interested in completing multiple or prolonged experiences will be required to contact the shadowing office for approval.
    • Depending on availability, students may be reassigned to another preceptor after completing 20 hours.
  • During flu season, November-March, students will be required to provide proof of current season flu vaccination. No exceptions or exemptions.
  • Students will be required to complete a survey at the conclusion of each shadowing experience.

Professions Covered

Audiologist - Specializing in hearing disorders and neural system balance, audiologists help patients manage hearing loss and balance disorders.

Cardiovascular Technician - A cardiovascular technologist works in a cardiac catheterization lab and performs very complex procedures, including stent implants, cardiac pacemakers and defibrillators and other tests to diagnose heart disease.

Dietitian - Specializing in food and nutrition, dietitians provide advice for healthy eating as well as insight into the ways specific foods can affect disposition, skin health and hormonal balance.

Dosimetrist - Medical dosimetrists ensure that radiation treatment promotes the most lethal radiation dose with the fewest side effects to the patient’s healthy organs.

Genetic Counselor - Genetic counselors provide a critical service to individuals and families considering undergoing genetic testing by helping them identify their risks for certain disorders, investigate family health history, interpret information, and determine if testing is needed.

Histology Technician - Histology technicians are specialized medical lab workers. They play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases by turning tissue samples into microscope slides.

Medical Assistant - Medical assistants often are the people who take medical histories, prepare patients for examination, assist the doctor during appointments and perform basic laboratory tests, along with other clinical responsibilities.

Medical Laboratory Scientist - A medical laboratory scientist (MLS), works to analyze a variety of biological specimens.

Nuclear Medicine Technologist - Nuclear medicine technologists prepare and administer small amounts of radioactive substances called radiopharmaceuticals, as well as other medications, to patients for diagnosis and treatments.

Occupational Therapy - These professionals use scientific and holistic practices to help patients perform daily activities at work, school, or home.

Perfusionist - It is the responsibility of the perfusionist, a specialized healthcare professional, to assume the function of the heart and/or lungs during cardiac surgery where the surgeon needs to temporarily bypass the patients circulatory and respiratory function.

Physical Therapy - Physical therapy (PT) is care that aims to ease pain and help patients function, move, and live better.

Radiation Therapist - A radiation therapist is part of the care team that treats patients with cancer and other diseases using radiation treatments.

Radiologic Technologist - Radiologic technologists are the health care professionals who perform diagnostic imaging procedures, such as X-ray examinations, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and computed tomography (CT) scans. Some of them specialize in specific techniques such as cardiovascular-interventional radiography, mammography, or sonography.

Respiratory Therapist - Respiratory therapists help people who suffer from chronic respiratory diseases like asthma, bronchitis, and emphysema. People who have had heart attacks or who have sleep disorders and infants who are born prematurely might also need respiratory therapy to help them breathe more easily.

Speech Pathology Therapist - A professional in speech-language pathology works with patients of all ages to overcome cognitive communication disorders and treat challenges in swallowing, language, and pronunciation.

Sterile Processing Technician - A Sterile Processing Technician is a medical professional who works to prepare, sterilize, and install all laboratory or healthcare equipment required for surgeries.

Surgical Technologist - A surgical technician is a healthcare professional who provides support during surgical procedures. Also known as surgical technologists, these professionals work alongside surgeons and medical teams to perform various responsibilities before, during and after surgeries.

Ultrasound Technician - An ultrasound technician, or a diagnostic medical sonographer, creates images called ultrasounds or sonograms. Sonography uses sound waves to produce images of the inside of your body.
