Erin Kavanaugh, M.D., FAAFP, is the chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine. In this role, she fosters a vibrant academic workplace culture, centered around excellence in physician performance, credentialing, peer review, education, research and more. She is deeply committed to improving patient care outcomes as well as ensuring an enthusiastic, highly educated pipeline for primary care in the community.
Dr. Kavanaugh is a family medicine physician with a passion for complex chronic disease management in underserved settings. She sees her patients at the Family Medicine Center at Wilmington Primary Care at Wilmington Hospital. Dr. Kavanaugh has served in various system and departmental leadership roles, including as program director for the Family Medicine residency program, co-program director for Emergency Medicine/Family Medicine residency program, vice chair and interim chair of the department. She was appointed named chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine in 2023.
Dr. Kavanaugh is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians and a past president of the Delaware Academy of Family Physicians. She has been awarded the Bronze and Silver Program Director’s Awards by the Association of Family Medicine Residency Directors in 2018 and 2022, respectively. She is currently a member-at-large of the Academy (Delaware Academy of Medicine/Delaware Public Health Association). She has completed numerous leadership development programs, including a fellowship with Association of Departments of Family Medicine in 2024.
Dr. Kavanaugh earned her medical degree from the Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University. She completed a family medicine residency at ChristianaCare’s Family Medicine residency program in 2010, where she served as chief resident.
