Dr. Swanson is the former surgical director for the Kidney Transplant Program at Christiana Care. He has been committed to educating, evaluating, performing transplants, and providing follow up care for kidney transplant patients since the inception of the program in 2007. His approach to patients and his fellow team members embodies the ChristianaCare message of serving together with love and excellence.
Dr. Swanson is a board-certified urologist who completed residency in 1989 and kidney/pancreas fellowship training in 1991. He served as the UNOS certified surgical director of the Walter Reed Army Medical Center Kidney/Pancreas Transplant Program and then became chief of the Organ Transplant Service. In 1999, he helped establish the Transplantation Branch for the National Institutes of Health’s National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease, which is a research-based program investigating immunosuppressants and the mechanisms of transplant tolerance. He was an intramural principal investigator on one protocol and associate on several others. He is a fellow in the American College of Surgeons.
