Proper nutrition can be critically important to your health

Nutrition

Proper nutrition can be critically important to your health and feeling of well being when you’re living with cancer. Eating an appropriate diet can improve your ability to cope with the potential side effects of cancer treatment. At the same time, the side effects of treatment can sometimes make it difficult for you to eat a healthy diet.

The cancer nutrition experts at the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center & Research Institute can answer your questions and help you to improve your nutritional intake before, during and after treatment. Our registered dietitians can also provide nutrition counseling if you are a cancer survivor.

Individual nutrition consultations

While the side effects of your cancer and treatment may be similar to those of others, no one responds exactly like you. Your experience of cancer is unique, which is why an individual nutrition consultation is often the best way to meet your needs.

You’ll meet with a registered dietitian and receive information tailored to your personal eating patterns and symptoms. You’re welcome to bring a friend, relative or caregiver to listen, learn and ask questions with you. An individual consultation usually last about 45 minutes.

During the appointment, a registered dietitian will interview you and analyze your eating patterns to determine how your diet measures up to what you need nutritionally. This knowledge will be used to create a personalized plan for you.

The dietitian will then review your customized eating plan with you and explain your personal requirements, suggest specific foods and offer tips on how to follow the plan. She can also answer any questions you may have, offer advice on symptoms that might interfere with your health and provide nutritional information sheets related to your needs.
