Fellowships

Clinical Rotations

A nephrology fellow is assigned a supervising nephrology attending.

Consultant

For each four-week block, a nephrology fellow is assigned a supervising nephrology attending. The fellow serves as a consultant for general medical and surgical inpatients with a variety of diagnoses (acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, hypertensive emergencies, fluid-electrolyte disorders, acid-base disturbances, proteinuria and pregnancy-related disorders). Expected daily census is approximately 15 patients (2-5 new consults; 10-15 follow-ups).

Transplant

Each four-week block will be a combined inpatient and outpatient experience.
The fellow will participate in daily multidisciplinary work rounds with the attending surgeon, attending transplant nephrologist and other support staff.

Each fellow will have access to at least 10 new renal transplants per year.

During the course of the rotation, the fellows will attend a half-day a week transplant clinic, which will be supplemented by monthly attendance in the same clinic when on rotation, thereby gaining clinical experience in the long-term follow-up of transplant recipients in the ambulatory setting. The fellows will attend weekly multidisciplinary kidney transplant patient-care meetings, during which time potential recipients to be listed, as well as their potential donors, are discussed. Additionally, the inpatient transplants, outpatients with problems and protocol are discussed in a team approach.

Interventional

This is a combined inpatient/outpatient rotation. The fellow will work one-on-one with a nephrology attending with special expertise in interventional nephrology. In the hospital the fellow will perform consults on patients referred for issues related to vascular access and will, under the direct supervision of the nephrologist preceptor, participate in the interventional procedure. The fellow will also evaluate new and follow-up patients in the office of Nephrology Associates, P.A., with vascular access issues and will participate in procedures at Nephrology Associate’s Vascular Access Center. The fellow will also review applicable radiographic studies on all patients followed.
